HISTORY

John Milne was Albuquerque Public Schools first superintendent, serving from 1911 to 1956,"and is credited for establishing a modern, professional and progressive school system." Recognizing Albuquerque's future growth, Milne started a process known today as land banking. Under his leadership, the district purchased large tracts of land for future schools. In some instances these lands appeared too remote to be useful. However, as the city expanded, the district already had lands for new school sites. As a result of his foresight, Albuquerque Public Schools still maintains a land bank and fund for the sale and acquisition of APS school sites today.
